As part of our ‘Women in Business’ series, we sat down with our client, Katelyn Aslett from My Giving Table to talk all things business.

Tell us about your business, My Giving Table?

My Giving Table is a philanthropic event booking platform and fundraising dinner party site. We encourage people to host small dinner events with a purpose in their home, with the aim of raising funds for their favourite charities. My Giving Table sets up a unique webpage URL for the event, which hosts share with friends as the event information, RSVP and payment portal. All monies are all tracked in accordance with the fundraising Collections Act.
My Giving Table makes event registration easy as you can organise and register small-ticketed events via the website, allowing small fundraising activation for simple events.

What inspired you to create My Giving Table?

As a foodie and a natural giver, I had a desire to contribute more to those in need. I recognised there was a better way to make community fundraising accessible, fun and powerful and set about to set it up to be a win-win for host, charities and guests.

Have you always been entrepreneurial? What led you to taking the first step to setting up your own business?

Yes, I’ve always been a creative thinker and entrepreneur. I started my first business and creative ideas in my teens. This concept, as a social enterprise, has come out of all my past learnings in business and the desire to give back in a powerful way.

What are some the biggest challenges/mistakes/setbacks you have experienced during your career? How did you overcome these?

The biggest issue with this particular idea was with the stringent requirements from a legal and fundraising perspective. It’s critical that the system is transparent and compliant so that the long-term trust is there.

What have been some of the most memorable/proudest moments in your career?

It’s still early days for My Giving Table, however, our first party we raised $1,000 for Orange Sky Laundry. It was a big moment. Now more charities are reaching out to know more about My Giving Table.

How do you make decisions in your business? What is your process?

I follow my plan and take one step at a time. I’m setting up this business while I am still in full time work, so it has to be methodical and practical.

What are your future goals for My Giving Table?

My goals are to create a smooth process that allows for major fundraising activities. Event with a purpose that raise funds and awareness for valuable community organisations, events that build social capital and connections. Our first major goal is to raise $1million for charity each year on the platform.

If a child walked up to you asking for your advice and you only had a few minutes to give them your best tip, what would it be?

Listen to your inner voice and follow your own heart and focus on what you enjoy but always get advice from people who know more than you do, so you can keep learning and growing.
